Alan is the Director and founder of Embarq Ltd, a CSR & HR consultancy. Embarq provides strategic advice and research on corporate social responsibility, sustainability, governance and funding for a range of clients. This also includes providing guidance documents and frameworks for measuring community benefits and social and economic outcomes for golf clubs and the value of golf in terms of health and wellbeing to golfers.
Outwith sport, Embarq’s other clients include local authorities, social enterprises and private sector organisations. Alan also volunteers for a golf dementia support project, Golf in Society.
Having a positive social and economic impact on local communities in which golf clubs operate is becoming more essential to the growth and sustainability of golf. Many golf clubs and stakeholders are now starting to understand the importance of being recognised and aligned with community needs, health outcomes, education and life skills.
Demonstrating the social value golf brings to people and society can deliver long term financial sustainability to golf clubs. For example, by providing local employment, demonstrating social inclusion, delivering education programmes and developing a community engagement strategy are just some of the practices that can easily be adopted. Embarq can provide local/national intelligence, practical guidance and innovative social value measurement tools to demonstrate the clubs value to society and the economy.
Some practical examples of Embarq’s support include:
- Governance and HR reviews
- Funding support
- CSR guidance material and toolkits
- Policy reviews
- Social value and impact measurement toolkits
- Community engagement plans
Excellent Resource in OnCourse, Alan has been an excellent resource in OnCourse version 4 development. His experience in CSR and creative ideas have been helpful when restructuring our Community section to represent the social value in golf facilities.
